Here is a copy of most of the email I sent to customer service at my favorite magazine. I'll post any replies from them:
Your general business practices border on unethical.
I subscribed to ***'* ****** because I enjoy the magazine.
I do not want you calling me trying to sell me books. Which you did last year and I said thanks but no thanks.
I do not want you telling me I signed up for automatic renewal when there is not an Automatic renewal box when you sign up.
I do not like the fact that I cannot log onto my account and turn off the Automatic renewal that you turned on automatically. I must find a phone number to call you and turn off automatic renewal.
I do not want you sending me books and telling me because I automatically renewed I requested these books be sent automatically. I do not like the fact that when I try to send back the books there is not an address or any written documentation with the books that say how to send them back.
I do not like the fact you have sent me an invoice for 2 books you sent automatically that I didn't want. Then when I call you (2/06/09, 12:10pm est) to say, I did not automatically ask for these books or another subscription, nor did I even pay for another subscription, your Automated phones say, if you want to return these books, use the automated system and then says, we are sorry, we are busy right now, try calling later, thank you goodbye, I am automatically annoyed.
Since there was no documentation, I wrote RETURN TO SENDER and put the package back into the mailbox, in which, it should have already been returned to you, automatically.
Please remove me from all your Automatically stuff. Do not call me about your stuff. Send me an invoice at renewal time with your best price and I will think your magazine is worth that price and send you money, or I won’t think it’s worth the price and not send you any money. That is called business. Make a good product, people pay you for it. Try all these other ways to Automatically get money from your customers, they get annoyed.
Thank you for your time and your magazine,
Dave Whitelaw
